Fazenda da Esperança Masbate Philippines

In 2003 Fazenda da Esperança inaugurated the first alcohol and drug rehabilitation center in Asia in the Philippines.

Fr. Pierino, then parish priest of Moonwalk, Las Piñas, Philippines, offered a tract of land in Bangad, Milagros, Masbate owned by the Mary Immaculate Development Foundation, Inc. (MIDFI), a non-profit organization that Fr. Pierino heads.

Before starting the Fazenda rehabilitation community in Masbate, Fr. Pierino sent twelve drug addicts from his parish for rehabilitation in Brazil and Germany. When they returned from rehabilitation after one year, they assisted a group of missionaries from Brazil and Germany in establishing the Fazenda in Masbate.

During the last years, with the help of many generous people from the Philippines and abroad, a beautiful center could have been established.

Fazenda Masbate now welcomes up to 42 boys for rehabilitation in houses with 14 beds each. More than 70 boys already finished their one year rehabilitation program, most of them are still in contact with Fazenda through regular meetings, some of them decided to come back to Fazenda to help the new boys to discover also the joy of a new life.

The community of Fazenda Masbate established different working sectors: Dairy, Rice, Bakery, Vegetable Garden, T-Shirt Printing etc. Through this, the community is earning the money for the daily operations.

It offers programs that help people overcome addictions and learn how to cope with life in order to stay substance free. The process of overcoming addiction can take a long time and Seagulls Village does everything that it can do to ensure that relapses will not occur.

So how do they accomplish these goals? The program has three different phases. They use the “Therapeutic Community treatment modality” which is designed to help people to help themselves while keeping them in a very structured and family oriented environment.

Every patient is thoroughly assessed and each patient is given an individualized treatment agenda. The methods are very holistic in nature because every aspect of the patient’s life is taken into consideration. Then the patient enters into phase two, which can last for up to eight months but is sometimes shorter depending on the patient’s progress. During this phase of treatment the focus is based on behavior patterns, self-discipline, and patterns within the patient’s life that affect their behaviors. They also set goals and develop priorities in line with self-improvement. Once they begin to demonstrate that they are willing and ready to change, the next phase begins.

While it might seem as though phase two would be the most difficult, phase three is the real test to see whether or not the patient is ready to re-enter into society and family life. There are sub-phases within phase three. The first is “Pre-Re-Entry” in which many new skills are learned. Patients prepare to go back to their normal lives by beginning social networking, working on family related issues, finally giving attention to life outside the facility itself, and spending time away from the center. They also work on how to prevent relapses from occurring in this phase.

The second sub-phase is “B-Re-entry” in which the patient begins to work on educational goals or vocational plans. During this phase the patient will spend a great amount of time doing community activities as well as planning their budget, eating habits, lifestyle, and which recreational activities they will choose to stay away from substance abuse. During this time the patient will work harder on how to deal with anxiety as well as how to avoid relapse in settings where they actually have to go through and withstand temptation. Even more importantly, this is the time when the patient is reunited with family and learns how to be a participating and responsible member of the family as well as re-establishing relationships.

During the last phase of re-entry, the patient is responsible for making sure they have a stable lifestyle which includes real financial planning and being productive. They also re-strengthen all previous plans and goals. It is a very good and holistic program that is beneficial to the patient and the family.

There are many other services offered throughout the program. The Seagulls Flight Family Circle is a program to help the families of the addict to recover and learn new behaviors as the addict recovers so that they are not left out of this important process. The T-Group is a meeting held weekly for those people to get together to heal with members of other addict’s families. Family Therapy sessions are held to help families understand what is going on in the recovery process and to maintain relationships with the patient. They teach a lot of skills and counsel both the family and patient.

Some other services provided are a help hotline for the public regarding drugs and counseling, drug testing services, internship training, drug prevention education, youth programs, and programs designed to promote drug free work and educational environments.
