Effects of Alcohol Addiction – Work and Career

Alcoholism is a form of addiction that has become a menace in the society. The adverse effects of alcohol addiction are evident even when you go out of your house; drunk drivers, the so-called “binge” drinkers and in general, the alcoholics are members of the community we live in, and no matter what we do, our lives are affected in one way or another.

For adults, perhaps one of the most important facets in life is the stage of striving hard for a career. We look at success by means of the career path a person chooses. Sad to say, this road to a meaningful and productive life is hindered by personal crisis due to alcohol addiction.

How does alcoholism affect one’s career?

Efficiency and efficacy in one’s field of work will always be determined by outputs and what can we expect from workers or employees who have problems on alcohol abuse?

Let’s focus first on blue-collar job workers. Laborers who work in factories are assigned to operate equipment especially in food production and textile manufacture. One of the main problems with workers who are alcoholics is absenteeism. It is difficult to get up in the morning after a drinking spree at night. Productivity is jeopardized once absenteeism is at bay. We often hear about workers who are fired because of this issue. Can you imagine what will happen to a company where majority of the workers miss work schedule habitually? Moreover, production is affected and in general, the whole company will suffer the consequences.

Then, there are also those kinds of workers can make it to work after a drinking session even on a nightly basis. But the question is: how efficient can those workers perform in their respective jobs? An alcoholic equipment operator may be the most risky issue in a company or factory. There is a possibility that this equipment operator will not have complete control of his senses and he may endanger his own life in the process.

For those who are in the food production business, the danger of having alcoholics in the working force is present and any mistake may prove to be catastrophic. Food is consumed by the general public and any human error in the preparation and production are may put the health of the consumers in danger.

How about in the field of white-collar job?

Officials in the corporate world are the ones in charge of decision making and big decisions made by alcoholic bosses may prove to be catastrophic, too. And what can be more dangerous than the workplace headed by an alcoholic? The problem with alcoholic bosses is that nothing much can be done about them since they may either own the company or they may be stockholders. The make or break status of the company will lie on their decisions.

Employees who have problems with alcoholism are also contributing factor in the make or break status of a corporation. Those who handle important data have a vital role since they are involved with statistical numbers that are deemed important in the finance sector of the organization. Due to hangover, an alcoholic employee might encode the wrong data and the error may produce a domino effect in the other vital information of the company.

Tasks in any field of work require efficiency and effectivity. Every worker or employee should be on his toes at all times and failure to do so may affect the entire workplace outputs. Alcoholism, in general, is a widespread issue that needs to be addressed if we want to live in a peaceful, productive and conducive atmosphere at work. Nothing can take the place of a job site where people perform to the best of their senses and abilities. An alcoholic-free community of workers and employees is achievable with the help and concern of everyone.
