Important: Statistic Shows the Need to Increase the Efforts in Fighting Addiction
Statistic shows that there are more residents hooked to illegal drugs in the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) than in any region in the country. According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), 97 percent of the total 1,097 barangays are affected by drug addiction, thus criminality and illegal activities within these areas are evidently high.
There is obviously a need for the increase of preventive measures and awareness campaigns on the part of the government to at least decrease the number of addiction victims in the country, particularly in Metro Manila. Educating people of all ages about addiction and how it can affect one’s life is a big factor in the prevention drive. Awareness campaign teaching victims of addiction where to get the help they need is also a huge help in saving lives.
On the other hand, treatments and rehabilitation programs should focus on saving the victims and not punishing them. Everyone should lend their hands in helping the government and non-government institutions in stopping underground groups from spreading illegal drugs and paraphernalia in order to make the Philippines a safer country to live in. The life of the future generation depends on us so we must take all actions and do our best to accomplish our responsibility.
A rehabilitation program plays a big role in saving victims because it is designed to help drug dependents uplift not only their personal character but their social relationships with others. An individual with addiction problem tends to feel detached from the society. This is due to the lack of self-confidence as a result of his addiction. He has gone through much negative experiences which take away his trust to his self and eventually put him into a state of self-destruction. He chose to separate himself even from other family members and close friends because he thinks no one understands his situation and predicament. As a result, his social interaction slowly weakens and may likely to get worst in the long run. Sooner or later he will transform into an outcast, resisting any contact from the people around him. He will start to feel alone and get depressed. When this time comes, the victim will create a shield and retreat in his shell. In the end, he will commit illegal actions because he thinks he has nothing to lose.
While the person is in the rehab center, he or she will be trained to be adept when it comes to interacting with others. He will be taught to mingle with his fellow residents, preparing him to the outside environment once he leaves the center. There are daily activities that allow the patient to blend with other residents. Group sessions are regularly conducted that promotes bonding and camaraderie among people.
It is a very clear fact that a rehab program is a tool that is used to repair broken parts of life and for building a health-wise and improved way of living with others. On the other hand, a drug or alcohol rehab center is a gateway in achieving these goals. It also serves as a safeguard in maintaining abstinence.
